Latex vs. Memory Foam

Did you know that memory foam was developed by NASA? There’s an interesting story behind this unusual material.

In the 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, security at most government contractors was extremely tight. Only workers could go in or out and everything they carried was scanned, even if they were just going to lunch.

Did you know that memory foam was developed by NASA? There’s an interesting story behind this unusual material...and several reasons why it may not be the best choice for a mattress.

Life and Livelihood Among Rubber Trees

In Kerala, tropical southern India, most rubber tree farms are very small—a typical holding is less than 20 acres. These are not rubber plantations with thousands of acres of land. Kerala-based Cocolatex, which supplies natural Dunlop latex for Savvy Rest organic mattresses, is a small company, privately owned and operated. I visited Cocolatex during the winter of 2011 and was fascinated by what I learned.

Savvy Baby, Safer Baby

Tiny babies sleep for 14-18 hours per day and their brain development is so rapid that 70% of adult brain growth is achieved by age two. Not only are babies busy developing in extraordinary ways, but during their earliest years they are also exceptionally vulnerable to toxins in their environment.

Is Natural Latex Organic?

Savvy Rest was the first organic mattress company in the U.S. to post organic certifications and independent test results on its website.  We have always made clear that although the raw materials of the Savvy Rest mattress casing are certified organic, there has been no formal organic certification program for the latex itself.

That has changed!

Savvy Rest’s natural Dunlop latex is now certified organic—just like our casing materials. Here’s more about this news, along with the story of what goes into making rubber sap into natural latex foam.

Indoor Air Quality & Mattresses

The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has written extensively about indoor air pollution. Visit www.epa.gov, and you’ll find a section dedicated solely to concerns about what we’re breathing indoors. Much of this material was produced in collaboration with the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

According to the EPA, there are three ways to approach the problem:

“The most effective way to improve indoor air quality is to eliminate individual sources of pollution.” (EPA) Is your mattress a source?

Good grief, even sex can be green!

We’re a little embarrassed but mostly delighted that author Stefanie Iris Weiss has featured Savvy Rest natural latex mattresses in her new book, Eco-Sex: Go Green Between the Sheets and Make Your Love Life SUSTAINABLE. Published just in time for Earth Day 2010!

What is an Organic Mattress?

When we say “organic” mattress, we mean that the Savvy Rest mattress is made from the purest, most healthful materials. And we don’t use the term casually—our materials are certified organic wool, certified organic cotton, and the purest natural latex (natural foam rubber) that exists. Industry-wide, however, there is no clear-cut definition yet as to what is an organic mattress and what is not. So, while the industry is evolving standards, currently it’s up to each manufacturer to determine their own.

The term "organic mattress" is common within the natural bedding industry. So, how do we use it and what does it mean?

Sweet Dreams for Babies

It’s heartwarming to see expectant parents prepare for a child. From a simple layette to nursery decor, their choices show protectiveness and care. Yet the sweetest lullaby may hold a sour note—if the baby is sleeping on a chemically treated mattress.

Unfortunately, most babies are.

Chemical flame retardants may have serious, long-term health consequences for developing children. Fortunately, there is an alternative.

An Organic Nest

Are you one of those people who watches Planet Green or HGTV? Me, too. I love the shows where people learn new things about themselves and their passions by the choices they make in decorating their homes. It’s fun to watch the designers strut their stuff, and see the delight on a homeowner’s face when a designer got it just right.

You can make "greener" choices in just about every area of your life. Here's why you might want to start where you sleep.
