What is an Organic Mattress?

When we say “organic” mattress, we mean that the Savvy Rest mattress is made from the purest, most healthful materials. And we don’t use the term casually—our mattress materials are certified organic wool, certified organic cotton, and the purest natural latex (natural foam rubber) that exists. Our Dunlop latex is certified organic to Global Organic Latex Standards (GOLS). Industry-wide, however, there is no clear-cut definition yet as to what is an organic mattress and what is not.

Sorting through the certifications.

Different Latex, Different "Feel"

One of the most common questions we’re asked is, “What’s the difference between Dunlop and Talalay?” We’ve described the technical differences here and here, so I’d like to take a shot at a more subjective view. It may help you understand natural latex better while you’re waiting for your free samples to come in the mail.

Pressure Relief or Support?

After a fruitless day of mattress hunting, you’re reading mattress web sites. Just as salespeople promised in store after store, you’re finding claims that a particular mattress will provide perfect pressure relief and perfect support. Or even that one mattress will be perfect for everyone.

Savvy Rest - pressure relief or support for the perfect organic mattress

The truth is that pressure relief and support are opposing goals.

Can you really have both?

The Modern Mattress — A Good Foundation

We are frequently asked what should be used as a foundation for an organic mattress. First, a little mattress history. In the very old days, of course, people slept wherever they could get comfortable.

In the middle ages things got better—at least for royalty. Mattresses were made of horsehair and other fine ingredients—you could have called them organic, though the term would've been moot before synthetic materials were developed. The big improvement was that mattresses were raised off the floor by wooden beds. That made it a lot easier to get up in the morning.

Mattresses for Children

Choosing the best configuration

When customers begin to find out what is in conventional mattresses, they think of themselves and their family. Sometimes folks think of their children first, sometimes themselves first. It often depends on whether or not someone in the family is having a physical reaction.

In any case we are often asked what the best configuration for children is.

Yoga and Natural Sleep

There is an interaction between yoga and sleep that is not often talked about. We know about the wonderful benefits of yoga—relaxation, better circulation, increased energy, and so on. We have heard of people getting up early to practice yoga; hopefully, they are also going to bed early so they’re not cutting their sleep short.

Even yogis can get this wrong.

Organic Mattress Association

The Maturing of the Organic Mattress Industry

During 2008 one web site published standards for a “National Association of Organic Mattress Industry”, using the acronym NAOMI. The standards listed at the end of this post are quoted directly from the web site in November 2008. The acronym is catchy, but is it supposed to be an industry association or a set of standards applied to an industry? It’s impossible to know from the awkward name.

The organic mattress industry has no association--yet.
