Resolution: Take Sleep Disorders Seriously

If you wake up after a full night’s sleep feeling exhausted, you might have one.

If you can’t get to sleep without a prescription, you might have one.

If you fall asleep readily but wake up way too early, you might have one.

If you wake up gasping for breath or hearing yourself snore, you might have one.

If your snoring can be heard outside the bedroom, you might have one.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 70 million Americans are affected by sleep loss and sleeping disorders. Are you one of them?

Indoor Air Quality & Mattresses

The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has written extensively about indoor air pollution. Visit www.epa.gov, and you’ll find a section dedicated solely to concerns about what we’re breathing indoors. Much of this material was produced in collaboration with the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

According to the EPA, there are three ways to approach the problem:

“The most effective way to improve indoor air quality is to eliminate individual sources of pollution.” (EPA) Is your mattress a source?

Multi-Tasking and Sleep

In western culture, the aphorism “More is better” is applied to just about everything. It doesn’t really matter if it’s a healthy something or an addictive something.

If exercise is good, more exercise is better.

If yoga is good, more yoga is better.

If eating nuts is good for you, eating more nuts must be better.

If you love fishing or golf, more fishing or golf would feel better.

Part of the reason we have trouble sleeping is because we are always trying to do more.

An Organic Nest

Are you one of those people who watches Planet Green or HGTV? Me, too. I love the shows where people learn new things about themselves and their passions by the choices they make in decorating their homes. It’s fun to watch the designers strut their stuff, and see the delight on a homeowner’s face when a designer got it just right.

You can make "greener" choices in just about every area of your life. Here's why you might want to start where you sleep.

How to Choose a Pillow

Necks are vulnerable. Just carrying around the weight of your head all day creates pressure in the cervical vertebrae and connective tissues. Your head is about eight percent of your body’s mass. If you work at a desk or use repetitive body motion during the day, your head and neck may not be held in an ideal position. The position of your neck during sleep should create as little strain as possible so those fatigued muscles can relax and recover.

When you add a pillow to your sleeping pose, good neck alignment is easier said than done.

Simple Chemistry

Are there chemicals in your mattress?

Co-Authored with Brad Luther, Ph.D.
At Savvy Rest we are often asked, “Are there chemicals in your mattress?” Usually we respond, “Our mattress contains only natural latex, we do not use synthetic latex blends,” because we think that’s what the questioner is trying to understand. But there is more to it than that.

For the scientifically minded, a detailed discussion of chemicals in mattresses and the composition of natural latex.
