Why Memory Foam Mattresses May Be Bad For Intimacy

A memory foam mattress may make memorable encounters between the sheets a bit less likely.

For most people, enthusiasm and the pleasure of the moment can override the limitations of a less-than-ideal bed. But for people who like to tune in to every element of the experience and create an optimal environment for intimacy, memory foam is not an ideal choice. There are two main reasons.

For some, a memory foam mattress may be a subtle obstacle to enjoying intimacy.

Resolution: Take Sleep Disorders Seriously

If you wake up after a full night’s sleep feeling exhausted, you might have one.

If you can’t get to sleep without a prescription, you might have one.

If you fall asleep readily but wake up way too early, you might have one.

If you wake up gasping for breath or hearing yourself snore, you might have one.

If your snoring can be heard outside the bedroom, you might have one.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 70 million Americans are affected by sleep loss and sleeping disorders. Are you one of them?

Is It Better To Sleep On Your Back?

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a Yes or No answer! The answer is, Yes and No.

Generally speaking, lying on your back creates the most consistent support for your spine. Your muscles and tissues can relax evenly in all directions. Like a baby, or a kitten napping on its back, you can just lie flat and your musculoskeletal system will be all lined up for restful sleep.

Memory Foam: Break Out of the Mold

Designed to relieve pressure points, memory foam mattresses and pillows can ease pain in specific areas. If you have a sore spot in your shoulders or hips, for example, heat from that spot will trigger a chemical reaction that softens the memory foam, right where you need it to yield.

Sleeping soundly is one thing, but sleeping immobile is another. Learn more about the freedom of movement a natural latex mattress can offer.

Mattresses and Sleep Quality

Contributed by W. Christopher Winter, MD, Medical Director, Martha Jefferson Hospital Sleep Medicine Center

For many hardy people, a mattress is a mattress. Whatever they are sleeping on gets the job done. They might view a mattress the way a weekend warrior views running shoes. “These worked great for me in college. Why mess with a good thing 10 years later before the big 5k?”

Better Sleeping Through Chemistry?

Natural latex mattresses can provide benefits that synthetic foam mattresses cannot

Synthetic chemicals are everywhere; they permeate our lives. There are chemicals for just about anything you want to do:

Your Mattress and Your Back

In your first few decades, you may be blissfully unaware of the delicate, amazing architecture of your back. You can lift, walk, dance or sleep without thinking much about that stack of disks and the extraordinary tube of nerves, your spinal cord. Your muscles may mutter now and then when you overdo it, but all in all, your back just quietly does its job.

Until it starts to scream.

If your back pain is keeping you from deep, restorative sleep, you’re not one in a million, unfortunately--you’re one of millions.
