Inside Savvy Rest

Selfless Selling: View from a Mattress Manufacturer

Most of us try to appear independent all day long. Independence is the American way. We declared it in 1776, we teach it in our schools, and it’s deeply embedded in our culture. We all live with daily pressures, guilt from the past, and fears about the future. We just try not to show them. But when we can let our guard down, we can admit we need love.

The inspiration behind Selfless Selling is creating authentic relationships with our customers.

Q and A With Our Talalay Suppliers

Kevin Stein and Derek Bobowick are from Latex International, the largest producer of natural Talalay in the world (and the only one in the United States). What follows is a nuts-and-bolts Q & A session we conducted with them recently.

Are there any differences in feel or texture between the natural and synthetic Talalay? If so, how would you describe them?
Natural latex is a little more “lively” than a synthetic/natural blend.

The Latex Industry

A guest post by George L Mathew

The rubber tree known as hevea brasiliensis originially came from the Brazilian rainforest. This is the most commercially exploited tree for extracting rubber. Many other plants have sap which is similar to rubber sap, but none of these have been used commercially to date. Whenever the price of rubber goes up, scientists come up with many possibilities for using other plants in a commercial application for extracting rubber.

George Mathew provides a snapshot of the latex industry from his perspective as the director of Coco Latex Exports, our Dunlop latex supplier.

2009 Green Festivals

Savvy Rest Washington, DC Green Festival

Two of the major green shows sponsored by Global Exchange and Green America are held in Washington, DC and San Francisco.

At the 2009 Green Festival in Washington in October our staff met hundreds of people, mostly from the east coast. The show was a hit, and Savvy Rest got a wonderful response. The most notable guest to try Savvy Rest was former presidential candidate Ralph Nader!

At the 2009 Green Festival in Washington, DC, our mattresses attracted hundreds of people. Next up, San Francisco!

Reclaim Home

What is remarkable about Bridget Biscotti Bradley is how multi-talented she is. Bridget opened Reclaim in Menlo Park, CA in early 2008. Back then we didn’t know much about her other than that she was opening a business to help people make their homes greener.

Bridget Bradley built Reclaim Home into a successful green home store, starting from scratch in 2008.

The Original Woolgatherer

When I began to seek out a supplier for organic wool, Hugh Shepherd's name popped came up several times. Hugh is the wool man at Woolgatherer Carding Mill in Montague, California, about 30 miles north of Mount Shasta. I didn't know Hugh personally at the time, and he didn't know me. This was early 2005.

If half the people in the world conducted business as earnestly as this guy, the world would be a safer, more inviting place.

Our Production Staff: Mighty, Wonderful

Working with your hands and strength is so different from working at a desk. We have great respect for both kinds of skills and make it a priority to encourage friendly, collegial relationships between our office folks and our warehouse staff.

They bring meaning to the workplace every single day, and we take opportunity to acknowledge that.
